Mr Mattu on the occassion while congratulating both the departments said that the city will have controlled stray dog population within 6 to 7 years as the corporation is set to kick-start a sterilization process at a large scale very shortly.

He said Srinagar Municipal Corporation is very much concerned about dog menace issue & is desperately working on the legal provisions in place to address the grave issue of the overpopulation of stray dogs. Under such provisions minimizing the availability of edible waste and dog sterilization programme are the only means to control the stray dog population.

The animal birth control surgeries (Dog sterilization) shall be done at the already existing Animal Birth Control and anti Rabbies facility centre at Faculty of Veterinary Science Shuhama.

The manpower resources shall be provided by Srinagar Municipal Corporation while as concern faculty member of SKAUST-Kashmir shall supervise the dog sterilization program under the guidelines of animal welfare board of India.

The Srinagar Municipal Corporation is planning to enhance dog sterilization surgeries in coming months upto 10 times by setting up of two more ABC/ AR facility centers.

The ABC/ AR center at Municipal Veterinary Complex Tengpora the construction work is being daily monitored by commissioner SMC

The RFP to carry out the mass dog sterilization has been tendered out.

Municipal Veterinary Officer Dr Tawheed Ahmad on the occassion said the Municipal Veterinary Services Wing (SMC) have been working on multiple strategies as per the guidelines issued by the Animal Welfare Board of India & directions issued by the Hon’ble High Court J&K from time to time for population management of stray dogs, rabies eradication & reducing Human-dog conflict with encouraging results.

The ultimate answer to street dog population control is to reduce the availability of edible waste & exposed garbage which provides an abundant source of food to the stray dogs resulting in increase in proliferation rate & life span of stray dogs besides the Animal Birth Control & Anti Rabies Programme (sterilization) being the only legal provision presently in place said Dr Tawheed.
